Chapter 35
âWould you like to stop by any chance? Iâm feeling a little peckish.â
âAlready! But we just ate!â
âIâm a growing woman,â said Maxine defensively.
Alex suppressed a small laugh but that didnât stop Maxine. âWe didnât get dessert because of that evil news report,â she continued. âI could really go for a Twix, a Kinder Mini, some Maltesers or a Curly Wurly.â
Faced with the young manâs apathy, she felt she had to take matters into her own hands. âThere must be a Mammouth1 in the area,â she added.
âA mammoth?â asked a bewildered Alex, struggling to make the connection between an obscure chocolate bar and an animal that had been extinct for millions of years.
âWell, yes, a supermarket.â
âOkay . . . Iâm not following. Do you want to visit a dinosaur museum or go shopping?â
Maxine gave him a perplexed look. âWeâre not going sightseeing, my boy. Weâre on the run.â
Over on his side of the car, Alex mumbled something unintelligible. Maxine let him carry on for a little while but she was still craving chocolate. âOr a Penguin!â she burst out.
âWhat?!â
âP . . . P . . . P . . . pick up a Penguin!â said Maxine, flapping her slender arms.
Alex smiled at the old ladyâs efforts. He was not going to put a dampener on things. If she wanted a chocolate bar, he was going to find one for her. He glanced at the petrol gauge and said, âWeâll need to fill up soon. Weâll stop at the next service station and pick up a Mars Bar or a Twix.â
Finally satisfied, Maxine sank back comfortably into the Twingoâs seat. She was looking forward to eating a chocolate bar even at the risk of losing her dentures. The end would justify the beans. Chocolate had always done her good. A faithful friend who left its mark on her hips. She didnât know whether the sudden cravings she was experiencing were somehow due to the Alzheimerâs or simply old age. She wanted everything and wanted it right away. Maybe when weâre old we sense that the meter is running and that thereâs no time to waste. Why bother waiting and being reasonable when you knew that the light was just at the end of the tunnel?
Alex indicated as the service station came into view. The more the car slowed down, the more Maxineâs chocolate craving grew. She started tapping her foot impatiently. No sooner had he parked than she opened the door and jumped out of the car in a stunt worthy of Jackie Chan. Alex barely had time to turn his head before his companion was out of the car and walking towards the small shop across from the petrol pumps.
âOkay, then, weâll get the petrol after . . .â said Alex to himself as he locked the car.
He hurried to join Maxine before she went in. He actually didnât have to walk that much faster than usual. Jackie Chan wasnât so young anymore.
âRemember, we have to look like normal people,â
